Senator Chambliss On Bailout: 'Doing Nothing is Not the Answer'

I disagree... if Congress would start "DOING" a little less, like getting their filthy hands involved where they shouldn't be... perhaps we wouldn't be where we are now. It's precisely BECAUSE of Congressional action that we have the economic crisis that we do... more government action is NOT the answer. Free market economics is!

Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss said Tuesday that some Atlanta banks are not making auto loans because of the credit squeeze connected to the current financial crisis facing the nation.

However, some state banking officials said while credit standards have tightened in recent months, they were not aware of any lenders putting the brakes on underwriting auto loans.

The first-term senator, who is running for re-election, said he has had confidential conversations with several bankers. Those bankers said the credit crunch and federal lawmakers’ inability to pass a rescue plan is quickly undermining their ability to do business, he said.

“There are some banks in Atlanta not making auto loans today,” Chambliss told reporters at a news conference at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport.

“Doing nothing is not the answer.”

Representatives of the state’s two big banking trade groups — the Georgia Bankers Association and the Community Bankers Association of Georgia — say they’re not aware of any total freezes.

“I’m not aware of any bank that has pulled back and said they’re stopping making auto loans because, quite frankly, they’re not doing that many of them in the first place,” said Steve Bridges, president and chief executive of the community bankers’ group. “The senator may be correct, but I have not had those conversations.”

SunTrust, the state’s biggest Georgia-headquartered bank, said it has reduced dealer-financed auto loans by about a third, but is still underwriting lending in that sector.

“We have not frozen; we have clearly tightened our lending standards in certain categories,” said Barry Koling, a SunTrust spokesman. “However, we remain committed to meeting the financial needs of our clients and we have by no means abandoned the lending business.”

Meanwhile, another financial trade group, the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates, said its auto loan volume has actually increased since last December.

House Defeats $700 Bailout - Victory?

Can't say I'm too upset about it not passing...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House on Monday defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue package, ignoring urgent pleas from President Bush and bipartisan congressional leaders to quickly bail out the staggering financial industry.
Stocks plummeted on Wall Street even before the 228-205 vote to reject the bill was announced on the House floor.

When the critical vote was tallied, too few members of the House were willing to support the unpopular measure with elections just five weeks away. Ample no votes came from both the Democratic and Republican sides of the aisle.

Bush and a host of leading congressional figures had implored the lawmakers to pass the legislation despite howls of protest from their constituents back home.

The overriding question for congressional leaders was what to do next. Congress has been trying to adjourn so that its members can go out and campaign. And with only five weeks left until Election Day, there was no clear indication of whether the leadership would keep them in Washington. Leaders were huddling after the vote to figure out their next steps.

A White House spokesman said that President Bush was "very disappointed."

"There's no question that the country is facing a difficult crisis that needs to be addressed," Tony Fratto told reporters. He said the president will be meeting with members of his team later in the day "to determine next steps."

"Obviously we are very disappointed in this outcome," Fratto said. ". There's no question that the country is facing a difficult crisis that needs to be addressed. The president will be meeting with his team this afternoon to determine the next steps and will also be in touch with congressional leaders."

Monday's mind-numbing vote had been preceded by unusually aggressive White House lobbying, and spokesman Tony Fratto said that Bush had used a "call list" of people he wanted to persuade to vote yes as late as just a short time before the vote.

Lawmakers shouted news of the plummeting Dow Jones average as lawmakers crowded on the House floor during the drawn-out and tense call of the roll, which dragged on for roughly 40 minutes as leaders on both sides scrambled to corral enough of their rank-and-file members to support the deeply unpopular measure.

They found only two.

Bush and his economic advisers, as well as congressional leaders in both parties had argued the plan was vital to insulating ordinary Americans from the effects of Wall Street's bad bets. The version that was up for vote Monday was the product of marathon closed-door negotiations on Capitol Hill over the weekend.

"We're all worried about losing our jobs," Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., declared in an impassioned speech in support of the bill before the vote. "Most of us say, 'I want this thing to pass, but I want you to vote for it—not me.' "

WOW! And they have the nerve to say that they don't have any culpability! You have to watch all the way through to the end... "these loans are riskless"! LOL!!!

Here are highlights from the video.

Maxine Waters: Through nearly a dozen hearings, we were frankly trying to fix something that wasn’t broke. Mr. Chairman, we do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and particularly at Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Franklin Raines. [Raines would barely avoid prosecution for fraud.]

Gregory Meeks: … I’m just pissed off at OFHEO [the regulators trying to warn Congress of insolvency at the GSEs], because if it wasn’t for you, I don’t think we’d be here in the first place. … There’s been nothing that indicated that’s wrong with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac has come up on its own … The question that then comes up is the competence that your agency has with reference to deciding and regulating these GSEs.

Lacy Clay: This hearing is about the political lynching of Franklin Raines.

Barney Frank: I don’t see anything in this report that raises safety and soundness problems.

And we still want a bailout?

“So now they try to solve the problem by having this credit bubble actually extended and I think the $700 billion will be like a drop in the bucket because the total credit market in the U.S. is something close to $60 trillion, then you have the CDS market – credit default swap – of around $62 trillion. Then you have the whole derivatives worldwide worth about a notional $1,300 trillion. So the $700 billion is really nothing and the Treasury is just giving out this figure when actually the end figure may be $5 trillion.”

Louisiana State Rep John LaBruzzo (R) Proposes Sterilization for Poor Women

This is the type of proposal you get when pragmatism reigns supreme and when the Almighty is left completely out of the discourse. Because Rep LaBruzzo is correct from a realistic fiscal point of view, it would be cheaper than paying welfare to more and more poor people. However, the thought of whether it’s morally right or wrong has never even crossed his mind. It’s all about the money! And on top of that, this is accepting the premise that it’s the government’s job in the first place to take care of poor people. And was this a Democrat? Nope, he’s a good ole’ Republican!

NEW ORLEANS -- A suburban New Orleans legislator is revisiting the controversial idea of paying poor women to undergo sterilization.

State Rep. John LaBruzzo told New Orleans Citybusiness, in an article published this week, that the program he is thinking about would be voluntary. It would pay poor women $1,000 to have their fallopian tubes tied.

"I've got a stack of e-mails for and against," LaBruzzo said. "Two-to-one in favor of something being done."

LaBruzzo, a Metairie Republican, said the plan could slow the growth of welfare rolls.

"It could be tubal ligation, IUD," LaBruzzo said. "It would be more coast-effective than having three to four kids. It would be more cost-effective for them."

More Guns, In More Places in GA?

"Gun-control advocates, religious leaders and government officials urged a key
Senate panel Tuesday to not let more Georgians carry firearms into places of
worship, schools, municipal buildings and mental hospitals.

But
gun-rights supporters say there is no evidence Georgians licensed to carry
firearms would endanger the public if allowed to bring their weapons to church
or onto college campuses.

The two conflicting views were aired when a
Senate committee heard testimony on possible legislation to amend Georgia’s
138-year-old law banning firearms at places of “public gatherings.”

The
committee’s chairman, Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg), has written draft
legislation that would allow Georgians with carry licenses to take weapons into
most public places other than jails and courtrooms.

However, Seabaugh
stressed that his draft is only the beginning of the process. He expects other
places to be excluded in the bill before the 2009 session begins in January.

The move to weaken the current ban on guns at “public gatherings,”
including churches and college campuses, comes on the heels of House Bill 89,
which became law on July 1. That measure lets people with firearms licenses
carry guns into state parks, restaurants that serve alcohol and on mass transit.

GeorgiaCarry.org, which pushed House Bill 89, is also backing the move
to make it legal to carry guns to church and other places.

The group’s
president, Ed Stone, said people with carry licenses rarely commit crimes. But
he said current gun-control laws don’t prevent criminals from committing crimes.

“Public gatherings laws won’t keep criminals from carrying weapons,”
Stone said. “Criminals don’t pay attention to laws. That’s why they are
criminals. This only effects the most law-abiding of citizens.”

GA DFCS Removes Baby from "Negligent" Parents and Turns Baby Over to Negligent Foster Parent Where Baby Dies

Most of you are aware of my ranting against the corrupted DFCS here in GA (and in most states)... but this time I don't have a whole lot to add to this article. Please read it and just think about the STUPID and ludicrous assumptions that our government makes about raising OUR children. They believe that they are better suited, more capable, and more trustworthy for the job than we. However, they have once again proven themselves totally and completely incompetent for the job. They aren't even able to do the job that a mother who "has a mind of a 6-year-old" (according to DFCS themselves). So should we assume that DFCS and their workers have the mind of a child younger than 6? Possibly 5? 4? You tell me?

Folks, it's time to wake up. If you and I continue to allow a socialistic mindset in our local government, we will wake up one morning with our children in the custody of someone who has the mental capacity of a 4 or 5 year old!

This story also hits home for me, because it occurred in my County.

The reason that DFCS removed Jessica from her parents?

"An anonymous complaint stated that [The mother] had not bonded with her child and that baby Jessica had not been kept clean, according to agency records."
i.e. she was DIRTY!!! Can someone PLEASE show me a baby that has NOT gotten dirty? And what does "not bonding" mean?

What did the State do and DEMAND of the parents?

"About a month later, the state removed Jessica from her home and placed her with a foster family. The couple were devastated but determined to bring their daughter home, and they earnestly began working to fulfill the state’s demands that they take parenting classes, alcohol counseling and psychological evaluations in order to get Jessica back."
What did the parents start doing to get Jessica back?

"They had made progress and hoped to have Jessica back this month. They were baby-proofing the house, putting plugs in electrical outlets, making sure the smoke detectors worked."
Yeah, I'm sure glad the parents got plugs in those electrical outlets... it might have killed the baby. Oh wait, never-mind, that's what DFCS did!

"The happy reunion never arrived. Jessica died while in the care of a state-appointed foster mother.

On Sept. 2, the foster mother, Wendy Osborne, failed to realize she left Jessica in her van, according to the police report. It was a day when temperatures reached 85 degrees. Two hours passed before Osborne checked her burgundy Dodge Caravan. Jessica, one day short of 9 months old, died in her car seat. Her body temperature reached 108 degrees, the police report said.

The next morning, Carter answered a knock on the door and saw several people from the Division of Family and Children Services and the Sheriff’s Office. Their news was horrifying."

Great News! Republicans and Democrats Plan to Nationalize Even More!

"Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says the government is crafting a plan to rescue banks from bad debts that are at the heart of Wall Street's worst financial crisis in decades.

Paulson said late Thursday the plan will need congressional approval. He and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke briefed lawmakers on the options they are considering.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he expected the administration and the Fed to have a proposal to lawmakers in a matter of hours, rather than days.

Paulson, Bernanke and Securities and Exchange Commission chair Christopher Cox asked lawmakers at the session to pass legislation giving the government power to buy distressed assets.

"It will be the power -- it may not be a new entity -- it will be the power to buy up illiquid assets," Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass, said.

Frank said there was "virtually unanimous agreement" among lawmakers in attendance that such legislation was needed.

Stocks rallied more than 400 points late Thursday after a report that the Bush administration was working on a new plan to alleviate fallout from the housing and credit crises. Those debacles have badly bruised the economy and pushed unemployment to a five-year high."

Kathleen Parker: 'Feminist Template Obliterated'

And they just keep coming... I was perusing today’s edition of USA Today on the plane ride home and read the following article by Kathleen Parker, syndicated columnist and conservative political commentator. And just as Camille Paglia noted in the article that I posted yesterday, Sarah Palin is changing the face of feminism. Although Mrs. Parker concludes that Mrs. Palin is just “correcting the perception of the quintessential woman”. As well, Mrs. Parker notes, as I did in my original post on this subject, that Hillary Clinton is no longer the face of feminism as we know it.

Here are a few excerpts from the article.

“To put it plainly, Palin is seriously messing with our templates. We know what political women in the USA are supposed to look like — and she's not it.

Palin fits no model we've ever seen, and we're not sure what to do with her. Equal parts
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Stands With A Fist — with a little Barbarella thrown in — Palin is a unique and unfamiliar brand.

She's what some might call "Trouble." And proud of it, too.

Reactions from all sides have fallen somewhere in the realm of hysteria. Republicans,
85% of whom view Palin favorably, are delirious that they — the maligned party of traditional family values — have produced the most credible, kick-caribou female candidate in U.S. history. “

“Palin either will be the new
Margaret Thatcher or the old Harriet Miers — either a rock-'em-sock-'em stroke of Churchillian genius or a tail-dragging, head-banging Baghdad blunder.

What has become abundantly clear in the meantime is that we have reached a crossroads in our nation's gender trajectory. Always burbling beneath the surface of American life and politics, gender has erupted the past few days into a geyser of emotion and vitriol.

What kind of woman do we want in high office? What kind of woman is acceptable?

Feminists have always called the shots on this question. The quintessential woman was pro-choice, interchangeable with any man — and her name was
Hillary Rodham Clinton. Feminists necessarily have viewed Clinton's defeat as a sexist manifestation of patriarchal betrayal because, really, what other explanation could there be? Clinton was perfectly molded according to the feminist template. Clearly, she lost because she's a woman, disappointed women told themselves.

But the greatest insult was yet to come. Republicans — those anti-woman, patriarchal Neanderthalian gun-clingers — nominated a woman whom Democrats would call a "Stepford wife," except she'd beat them to a bloody pulp with a moose antler.

The irony is almost too on-the-nose to be enjoyable, but there is other cause for satisfaction. Even if Sarah Palin ultimately fails to prove herself worthy of second-in-command, her enthusiastic reception has proved that there are other kinds of women in the USA — lots of them — who have a different idea about what's best for womankind.

The sisterhood has been put on notice. “

Camille Paglia: 'Sarah Palin, A Powerful New Feminist'

I just came across this article by noted feminist and atheist, Camille Paglia. I found it very interesting that she came to the same conclusion that I did in my earlier post (RNC Day 3: A Historic Day) where I stated that “feminism changed”. Most of her article is filled with ramblings... but here are a few excerpts where she discusses Sarah Palin and how she has/is changing feminism as we know it.

“A beady-eyed McCain gets a boost from the charismatic Sarah Palin, a powerful new feminist -- yes, feminist!”

“Conservative though she may be, I felt that Palin represented an explosion of a brand new style of muscular American feminism. At her startling debut on that day, she was combining male and female qualities in ways that I have never seen before. And she was somehow able to seem simultaneously reassuringly traditional and gung-ho futurist. In terms of redefining the persona for female authority and leadership, Palin has made the biggest step forward in feminism since Madonna channeled the dominatrix persona of high-glam Marlene Dietrich and rammed pro-sex, pro-beauty feminism down the throats of the prissy, victim-mongering, philistine feminist establishment.

In the U.S., the ultimate glass ceiling has been fiendishly complicated for women by the unique peculiarity that our president must also serve as commander in chief of the armed forces. Women have risen to the top in other countries by securing the leadership of their parties and then being routinely promoted to prime minister when that party won at the polls. But a woman candidate for president of the U.S. must show a potential capacity for military affairs and decision-making. Our president also symbolically represents the entire history of the nation -- a half-mystical role often filled elsewhere by a revered if politically powerless monarch.

As a dissident feminist, I have been arguing since my arrival on the scene nearly 20 years ago that young American women aspiring to political power should be studying military history rather than taking women's studies courses, with their rote agenda of never-ending grievances...”

“...I am still waiting for substantive evidence that Sarah Palin is a dangerous extremist. I am perfectly willing to be convinced, but right now, she seems to be merely an optimistic pragmatist like Ronald Reagan, someone who pays lip service to religious piety without being in the least wedded to it. I don't see her arrival as portending the end of civil liberties or life as we know it.”

“It is certainly premature to predict how the Palin saga will go. I may not agree a jot with her about basic principles, but I have immensely enjoyed Palin's boffo performances at her debut and at the Republican convention, where she astonishingly dealt with multiple technical malfunctions without missing a beat. A feminism that cannot admire the bravura under high pressure of the first woman governor of a frontier state isn't worth a warm bucket of spit.”

“...Now that's the Sarah Palin brand of can-do, no-excuses, moose-hunting feminism -- a world away from the whining, sniping, wearily ironic mode of the establishment feminism represented by Gloria Steinem, a Hillary Clinton supporter whose shameless Democratic partisanship over the past four decades has severely limited American feminism and not allowed it to become the big tent it can and should be. Sarah Palin, if her reputation survives the punishing next two months, may be breaking down those barriers...”

At the end of the article she reveals a little more about herself... in that she is a supporter of abortion, however she recognizes that abortion IS murder, but she’s ok with that. Quite the strange individual... so just keep that in mind as you read. I am only posting it because of the fact that she is an avowed feminist who asserts that Sarah Palin is changing feminism... you can throw the rest of it out. :)

RNC Day 3: A Historic Day

I wrote the following post Thursday while still in St. Paul, but forgot to post it until just now. So here it is...

Yesterday was definitely a historic day for our country. Last night Sarah Palin accepted the Republican nomination for VP, and now has the best chance in our history of becoming the first woman to ascend to the Vice Presidency of the United States of America.

From the response given to her by the RNC yesterday evening, it is not only widely accepted by the voters, but desired! For those of you not at the convention, feminism was on full display last night, and Sarah Palin made it look better than it ever has before. Why? She wasn't shrill, she didn't have a chip on her shoulder, and she wasn't angry at the world. Tonight feminism changed, and I believe changed for generations to come. Feminism will no longer be personified by Hillary Clinton and the “sisterhood of traveling pantsuits”. Rather it is now represented by evangelical women, soccer moms, and let’s not forget “hockey moms” (i.e. “pitbulls with lipstick”). This new shift in representation is much more mainstream and the leaders (i.e. Palin, et al) are much more articulate and less in your face feminists, which is much more attractive to both men and women.

So how did Sarah Palin get to this place? She gave the American people what they have wanted from their politicians for several decades now – strong and decisive political leadership while on the offence! She attacked the liberals, she attacked the liberal media, and she supported all things conservative, which most Americans hold dear. However, it is also more than that – after being at the speech last night, I can say that she is definitely a very gifted speaker and communicator. She can draw in her listeners and captivate them with her words. She communicates her message clearly and succinctly. And to top it all off, she appears “real”. She does not appear to be tainted by Washington politics and the corruption that goes along with it. And thus she has captivated the hearts of conservative Americans.

At the same time of captivating the hearts of conservative Americans, she also tugged on the heartstrings of American Feminists as well. I cannot tell you how many women I spoke to last night who were breathless during and after Mrs. Palin’s speech. The “conservative” feminist in the GOP have been waiting a long time for Mrs. Palin to arrive... and now it appears that all conservatives will be pulling up along-side them to support their new leader. Even the Evangelicals who have historically not approved of the feminist movement, are now piling on board (here and here) to support the McCain/Palin ticket. So not only was it a historical event for the political system in America, but for the religious system as well.

So, for better or worse things are changing... so don’t let the historicness slip by you with all of the hoopla surrounding the nomination. Take a minute to think about the far reaching impact of this nomination and consider where it will lead us as a nation. This will definitely be a moment in history that you will look back on and tell your kids, “yep, I was there”.

This evening I got the chance to go back on the convention floor and bring my wife Christie with me as well. It would not have been possible without the help of Jay Neal, GA Representative from the 1st District in LaFayette, GA. As well as Jeff Mullis, State Senator from the 53rd District in Chickamauga, GA. Both gentlemen were gracious enough to allow us to borrow their floor passes so that Christie and I could get on the floor together.
